Treatment Options

  • The National Cancer Institute has stated that breast-conserving therapy (BCT) is "preferable" to mastectomy for most early-stage cancer patients. The BCT procedure involves a lumpectomy and examination and removal of a few lymph nodes, followed by a course of radiation therapy.[4]

  • The current standard-of-care in BCT practice is lumpectomy followed by whole breast irradiation (WBI).  The WBI includes an all important “boost” phase targeted to the lumpectomy margin – the most likely site for recurrence.

  • Recent randomized trials[5,6] clearly support contribution of the boost dose and report that the boost dose reduces the recurrence rate by an additional one-third.
