The National Cancer Institute has stated that breast-conserving therapy (BCT) is "preferable" to mastectomy for most early-stage cancer patients. The BCT procedure involves a lumpectomy and examination and removal of a few lymph nodes, followed by a course of radiation therapy.[4]

The current standard-of-care in BCT practice is lumpectomy followed by whole breast irradiation (WBI). The WBI includes an all important “boost” phase targeted to the lumpectomy margin the most likely site for recurrence.

Recent randomized trials[5,6] clearly support contribution of the boost dose and report that the boost dose reduces the recurrence rate by an additional one-third.
