- It is estimated that one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer during her lifetime.[1]
- An estimated 211,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among US women in 2007.[3]
- Similar to other cancers, the risk of developing breast cancer increases with age. Women 50 years or older constitute nearly 80% of newly diagnosed cases.[2,3]
- Women of European heritage have a greater risk of developing breast cancer when compared to African Americans. However, African Americans are more likely to die from the disease.[3]
- Due to public awareness and improved diagnostic techniques nearly 80% of breast cancers are detected in the early “localized” stage of the disease.[2]
- When breast cancer is discovered in localized stage and treated there is a 97% chance of five-year survival.[1]
