Excitement surrounding AccuBoost® at American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) Annual Meeting

Advanced Radiation Therapy is pleased to recognize the substantial attention and excitement that the AccuBoost® technology received at the recent American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) meeting held in San Diego. In a number of oral and poster presentations, the very positive results of clinical experience with the technology, clinically referred to as non-invasive breast brachytherapy (NIBB), were presented.

One of the highlights of the meeting were observations made by Dr. Douglas Arthur, a leading oncologist in the treatment of breast cancer from Virginia Commonwealth University(VCU), on the future of Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation(APBI) as part of a panel presentation.  Dr. Arthur indicated that the keys to the future of Partial Breast Irradiation were hypofractionation and the use of a non-invasive breast brachytherapy approach, which is the fundamental design approach of the AccuBoost technique.

Among the oral presentations at the ABS meeting, Dr. Jessica Schuster from VCU presented “Update of a Multi-Center Clinical Data Registry of Non-Invasive Image-Guided Breast Brachytherapy for Tumor Bed Boost” which expanded on the positive cosmetic and toxicity data of the group’s prior publication. In another, the results of a phase II study from the Brown University Oncology Group and Rhode Island Hospital by Dr. Jarek Hepel entitled “Non-invasive Image-guided Breast Brachytherapy (NIBB) for APBI” were delivered.  This presentation reviewed very positive cosmetic and toxicity results from this APBI study. AccuBoost is a Non-Invasive Breast Brachytherapy approach which allows clinicians to deliver a conformal,  targeted radiation field while sparing dose to the heart, lungs, opposing breast and skin.
